The 4th Annual Capture Photography Festival occurred on April 1st – 28th, 2017. It took place around Metro Vancouver and parts of the Lower Mainland. Capture Photography Festival is a not-for-profit organization devoted to exhibiting challenging and thought-provoking photography from local and international artists.
Launched in 2013, the Capture Photography Festival strives to nurture emerging talent, engage community, and spark public dialogue about photography as an art form and a vessel for communication. The April 2017 iteration of the Festival presented photography at over 50 esteemed galleries throughout Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. It also included public installations, tours, films, artist talks, and panel discussions.
Proposals were to be submitted by November 15, 2016 at 11:59pm. This call was open to artists and art spaces. Capture Photography considered any exhibitions of photography and lens-based work, no matter the subject matter. Additionally, we welcomed proposals for innovative events.
This year applicants could choose between either the juried “Selected Program” or the non-juried “Open Program.”
The “Selected Program” was open to exhibitions presented in professional spaces. Capture Photography defined “professional space” as: any space that operates full-time as a gallery or exhibition space. This also included public galleries and museums, commercial galleries, artist-run centres, artist collectives, etc. A jury of artists and art professionals evaluated proposals submitted to the “Selected Program.”
The “Open Program” was open to exhibitions presented in any space; from conventional gallery spaces, to community venues, to the side of a bus. Also, exhibitions could have been any length, including one-day pop-ups. Unlike the “Selected Program,” submissions to this category were not juried, and were automatically included in Capture Photography Festival 2017 if they met the Festival’s mandate.
