Pine needle basket making workshop
Discover the art of creating pine needle baskets in this hands-on workshop led by Deanna Wium, a proud member of the Secwépemc (Shuswap) First Nations. In this class, Deanna will guide you step-by-step in transforming long Ponderosa Pine needles into a stunning basket. You’ll start by forming a center base and then wrap and stitch the needles together in a spiral pattern to build the walls of the basket. This method, practiced for centuries by Indigenous peoples across North America, results in a strong yet lightweight piece of art.
Deanna sources the Ponderosa Pine needles herself from Penticton, where these iconic trees thrive in southern British Columbia. Native to Canada and the Rockies, the trees produce needles 5-10 inches long, making them ideal for this traditional form of basket-making. Pine needle weaving not only highlights the beauty of natural materials but also honors the ingenuity of Indigenous communities who used these techniques for everyday life and cultural expression.
Join us for this unique workshop to create a piece of art rooted in history, tradition, and sustainability.
