Artist Statement - The Table
Of great significance in everyone's life is a table.
It is the place we eat, but more importantly, the place where we meet others and ourselves. The table and the gatherings around it are critical to my life and culture.
Family meals are crucial for family development, relationships and child growth. Gatherings with friends also often occur around a table. We meet, have coffee or a meal and share ourselves and our feelings. We feel empathy, love but also anger, resentment and frustration.
We also meet ourselves at the table. Self reflection, recollection and reminiscences as well as dreams may occur at our tables.
This series of work is about all of the above. Most pieces are semi-realistic, while some are more abstract, but they all represent the emotions and dynamics that occur at gatherings at tables.
About the Artist - Jeannette Bittman
In my early 20's, I was introduced to clay and pottery became my hobby. After several years of working on the wheel, I discovered hand building and life was never the same.
I sculpt abstracted human bodies and faces. I am intrigued by expressive images.
Although I painted part time for several years, with the start of COVID and retirement oil painting, drawing became my full-time occupation. I was able to enlist in art courses from around the world with renown artists. I paint primarily figurative images and portraits. I utilize a variety of mediums including pastel, charcoal, watercolour, ink, and oil paints. I am particularly drawn to more expressive and abstracted images.
