Chigiri (ちぎり絵) | Japanese paper art workshop

Chigiri-e is a traditional Japanese art using hand-dyed Japanese paper called Washi. It is torn into different shapes and sizes of paper to glue onto a board to form a picture. It is similar to painting, except it uses paper instead of paint as the colours. Visually it looks like an oil painting or water colour painting, but it is all made with paper.

Workshop Outline:

  • Discover various types of paper we'll use.
  • Learn to draw lines using brush moisture.
  • Create your picture using these techniques.
  • Master applying glue with different methods.
  • Create one picture during the class.

Meet your instructor: Leanne Lai (Chun-Lien Lai)

Leanne Lai, an artist and musician from Taiwan, and earned a performance diploma in piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She possesses a deep passion for handmade paper and crafting exquisite pieces with it. Utilizing handmade paper sourced from diverse Asian countries, she has created stunning books and cards, some of which were sold at the notable Suho Memorial Paper Museum in Taipei.

Around 24 years ago, Leanne embarked on a journey to master Chigiri-e, a traditional Japanese paper collage technique using hand-dyed paper known as washi. Under the guidance of several masters in Taiwan, she honed her skills and has since held numerous well-received exhibitions of her Chigiri-e artwork in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and the Vancouver area. Noteworthy exhibitions include her participation in the Harmony Arts Festival Exhibition in 2018, 2019, and 2022, as well as a recent showcase at Vancouver’s Pendulum Gallery in February 2024.

Additionally, she shares her expertise by teaching Chigiri-e at various locations, including Van Dusen Botanical Gardens and Toronto’s The Japanese Paper Place.
